Navigating South Florida’s Unique Fall Transition

Unlike the dramatic seasonal changes experienced in Northern climates, South Florida’s transition is characterized by subtle shifts influenced by its tropical climate. Understanding this transition can help gardeners, homeowners, contractors, and landscape enthusiasts make the most of the cooler, drier months and prepare their landscapes for the coming season.

This transition into fall is not marked by the vivid color changes typical in other regions of the County, but here are a few things to expect and what you can do to take advantage of this upcoming cooler season.

Fall Landscape Tips for South Florida

  • Irrigation: Fall brings a decrease in rainfall, lower humidity, and slightly cooler temperatures. The reduction in rainfall and storm activity can significantly affect the landscape, so make sure that irrigation systems are fully functional and ready to go. Adjusting the zone run times and days to water may be necessary to compensate for the decrease in rainfall.
  • Pruning: Lightly prune overgrown shrubs and trees. This helps maintain shape and promotes healthy growth in the coming months.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer to support continued growth. Consider slow-release formulas to provide nutrients over a longer period.
  • Mulching: Add a layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. This also helps with weed suppression and is especially beneficial as temperatures begin to cool slightly.
